Tranny mystery
Hmm a friend of mine has a 1990 Acura Integra LS, it is an automatic. When he is driving on the freeway at about 65 the rpm is at 4k and it doesn't seem to go past that. Seems like the car isn't shifting into 5th gear. He has changed his tranny three different times but yet this problem has still continued. He has recently swapped his engine as well but still the problem continues. What could be the cause of this?
oopps...well then it probably isn't going into 4th gear... hmm ECU problem you say? I'll check if he swapped the ecu as well, he hasn't thrown any codes, it's always been an automatic. Any other suggestions?
Aren't 90 integra's the 2 range auto trans? "Sport" and "Normal"?
Maybe it's the "S" button on the shft **** or the solenoid to accuate the
"sport" mode not working.
Just my .02 cents.

hmm well the S 3 button is blinking for some reason, but he said when he did the swap he didn't plug one of the electrical components, and this problem has been happening even before the S buttons been blinking. But I will make sure of that too....thanks for all the suggestions guys

According to the helms:
The "S3" indicator and the TCM will blink if there is a problem with the
transmission or it's systems. For problem diagnosis you must count
the number of blinks on the TCM LED indicator.
I have the helms for 93 teg so it might be different on 90-91.
Post again when you find out more info on what it's doing.

the manual swap is a good idea...i did one and couldn't have been happier. that was the best $750 i put into my car...(including ACT clutch/PP)
you could be having pressure problems in the valve body...maybe some junk got in it or it's leaking. i'm not very familiar with the honda automatics, sadly enough i know more a gm ones, but the valves that control what gear you are in must have free flowing hydraulic passages.
since he's on his second tranny, make sure that when you put the car in D, or D4, however it's set up, that it actually is in that gear. if something shifted (in a locational sense, not gear-wise) it may appear that you are in D, while you are actually in a lower gear, which might be what is keeping you in third.
also check that the cable going to the tranny is not in anyway damaged, which could also keep you from going into fourth, relating back to the problem i just described. again, i don't remember exactly how the auto tranny is hooked up, but all the other ones i've worked with have a lever on the outside that "shifts" it into the different gears.
hope this helps.
