Ok heres my delema.
I have a EF for the track and it has a JDM b16b engine (with a spare b18b pushing 144 hp and 124 ft/lbs) and coupled up to that is a JDM YS1 trany with stock lsd. Is there any transmission with better suited gearing for the track preferable in cable, or in hydro. In hydro, what would be the best trany for this package?

Well here are the gear ratios for a cable b16;
3.307
2.105
1.458
1.107
0.875 (final drive 4.4)
And these are some hydro ratios !!
98 Spec JDM R tranny
3.23
2.105
1.458
1.036
0.787 (final drive 4.78)
96Spec JDM R
3.23
2.105
1.458
1.036
0.787 (final drive 4.4)
GSR S80 tranny
3.23
1.9
1.36
1.034
0.787 (final drive 4.4)
I'm pretty sure that these are correct so your ratios are pretty good for the track right now !!

yeah an FD swap would be awsome.. but I have yet to find one for a b16 cable trany, all are for hydro and clearly state that.

Or go hydro and then drop in a 4.7/4.9 fd.

You know cable trannies came before hydro. YS1 was the first trans to receive the new updated internals. So it's a mistake to call something only "hydro" tranny compatible. And it's a mistake to say YS1 is hydro compatible. It is the the hydro trannies that are 2nd generation cable compatible.
If you don't want your YS1. I'll relieve it off your hands.

ok... forget i said anything about that transmission...
i am talking about my car being compliant with a hydro tranny. I am looking to pick up a hydro trany and put the following gears in it:
1st - 3.077
2nd - 2.10
3rd - 1.652
4th - 1.308
5th - 1.033
FD - either 4.4, 4.78, or 4.928
and looking to keep my YS1 as a spare. My question to you guys is how can I convert my car which came with a Cable trany to work with a Hydro transmisison, and how well does it work. And then the next question would be, what would be the best Hydro trany to get (as a spare) to work with the JDM b16b.

What mounts do you have?
I don't think the cable trannies work with certain hydro mounts, but I could be all wrong. If that's the case then you would need a different tranny mount. You will also have to drill out the rear tranny bracket to accept the larger bolts for the hydro tranny...not that big of a deal, just something to note.
In any case, I would sell that cable if you are going hydro and pick up a spare hydro sometime in the future. Why do you need a spare anyway? Is this a track car?
I personally like my USDM ITR/96+ spec ITR/CTR (
) with the JDM 4.785. I mostly drive on the streets and it's perfect for me. I don't think I would ever go back to a 4.4 final drive. If it were a track only car, or if you are brave enough, I could definitely see getting the 4.9 very appealing.
An LSD is also a bonus to have

that would be most likly the scenario.. getting rid of the cable tranny in opt for a hydro. The car is a track only car and definatly not road legal. the YS1 has a lsd in it, and I have a ATS Carbon LSD which is sitting on my garage floor which should have fit, but due to some misscomunication, it dosent ; (... I have the option of picking up a b16a2 hydro trany with ATS Metal D20 lsd. and would probally pick that up and after I blow out a gear, upgrade it to the following close gear ratios:
1st - 3.077
2nd - 2.10
3rd - 1.652
4th - 1.308
5th - 1.033
FD - either 4.4, 4.78, or 4.928
my main question is still the reliablity and strength of the swap. Will it hold up to pure track driving. Or am i just stuck with the cable and paying through the nose when I rebuild it (it was just rebuilt FYI and has only 10 laps on it... would have been more but had electrical problems and we shut down)..

It should be just as strong as any other ITR/Si tranny out there. There are plenty of them getting tracked all the time, and I'd guess the only wear item would be synchros and an occasional bearing. Other than that It won't be any weaker/stronger than your current tranny. The advantage is finding parts for the hydro or just a replacement.
You realize the YS1 is the predecessor to the "ITR" gearbox?
Technically the S1 was the first "ITR" gearbox.
If all you want to do is add a final drive / LSD to the YS1 it can be done.
Please describe details / PM and I will straighten out your confusion.
In the meantime read these:

Good luck
