torquing down nuts and bolts
i was wondering how important it is to torque something to the exact specs specified . i mean i always torqued everything on my car but the thought came to me today when i was changing my oil . for example, the torque spec for the drain bolt on the oil pan is 33 ft/lb . but what would happened if i torqued it a little over say 34 or 35 ? i was wondering because i dont know if 1 ft/lb is really that big of a difference .
also, is it okay to use a breaker bar to break the nut on the drain and fill plug on my tranny ? because i dont want to go through the trouble of taking it out with a regular socket and maybe cause some scarred knuckles since its in a tight space .

OMG NO!!!!!!111
Nothing will happen. Do you actually use a torque wrench on the drain plug? I applaud you if so. For most things, getting the precise torque isn't critical. It's rare that anyone at the shop will use a torque wrench, experience is valuable in this matter.
Anything inside the engine or trans deserves a torque wrench, but most stuff outside can be tightened to what you know to be reasonable correct with absolutely no effects.
Then there is the other torque wrench... "Let's see, 65 ft/lbs, thats #3 on the impact. right?"
Using a breaker bar to loosen anything won't hurt it, it's the same bolt turning, no matter what tool you use.

If you always tq your drain plug bolt you will never have to wrry about pullig threads on the pan as well as you will get a perfect seal on the crushwasher everytime. I will go out on a limb annd say that 85% of the cars brought to me for repair have pulled threads on the drain plug and as soon as I try to tq them to spec they end up strippping out..
1-2ftlb off isnt going to hurt much though as stated earlier..
If you want your stuff to last a lifetime tq it to spec every time and it will.
