Default tips for valve adjustment

me and my bro did a valve adjustment on his LS the other day for the first time. We got it done correctly, but it took awhile. Every time we would think that the drag on the feeler was within spec, it was either tight or loose when we locked the nut. We did understand that weight on the valve tool will put weight on the feeler gauge, as we tried to account for that. We really tried to hold the tool steady while locking the nut also.

any tips for doing it correctly/efficiently ?
we are about to do my gizzer and were hoping to get it done a little quicker
thanks

Do it after the car has been sitting overnight. (which goes without saying, since it should be completly cold anyhow). You'll get a better feel for drag if most of the oil has gotten a chance to drain off the parts. Also do your best to keep the feeler gauge at a straight angle.

sounds like you guys are doing it right, but seems to me you guys are having a problem with the valve adjustments, Snap-on and other big name tool companies carry a valve adjustment tool. IT save alot of time and lets you do it the proper way.

It is better in my opinion (valvetrain wise- not performance) to have clearance a little loose opposed to too tight. I do recommend getting the jam nut tool and some long, flat (not angled) feeler guages. The engine must be 100 degrees or cooler. Practice makes perfect.

The snap-on tool is amazing. I bought it a while ago and it was worth the 45 bucks.

It's on the snap-on site i think. just get the 10mm one. they're universal. I bought mine off of a snap-on truck.

yeah i have the snap on tool.
if you go to the snap-on site to order the item, they had a misprint mixing up 10mm and 12mm jam bolts. the above part # is correct

i guess i just need some more practice
