Default timing check

i think my timing might be off a little, on a cold start the car will idle at almost 2000 rpm and slowly fall down to about 700 as the car warms up, and something under the hood whines (tension?) ive got a timing light but im not sure how to use it. also i have a cel for the o2 sensor if that helps. i guess my main question is how do i use the timing gun to make sure the timing is on?

p.s. i already searched and didnt come across anything too useful, and i plan on getting a helms soon

The timing light has 2 battery leads to make the light flash. Then you have one lead that clamps to #1 cyl plug wire. Then jump the timing connector. Point the light @ the crank pully. Loosen the dist. mount bolts. Then adj your timing. If you had a service manual it will give you every detail. Check it out.
