Default timing belt replacement question

when i took the crank pulley off a special washer fell. im confused on how it goes back on. my B16 CRX shop manual says that it goes between the crank pulley and the crank pulley gear. but there is a groove on the crankshaft that holds a square notch. there is a groove in the crank pulley gear for the notch and the pulley, but not for the special washer.

the washer goes behind the timing cover, infront of the timing gear as if you were looking at it.

kinda like this, crank pulley, then timing cover. then your special washer, than the crank gear itself.

make sure you put the special washer as you call it in the right way. the round face goes against the belt.

Maybe this picture shows it better?

Maybe depends on what year, but you probably have 2 of them (#12). Face it so the outer edge is bent away from the belt. Those washers guide the belt in place, but you don't want the outer edge of the washers cutting into the belt.

The timing sprocket (#11) has it's own key that fits into the key groove. Then the washer. The lower timing cover goes between #12 & #13. Then place that other key into the groove before you install the pulley.

thanks a lot guys that really helped. but the "special washer" doesn't have a groove cut in it for the notch. the crank pulley has one, and so does the gear, but why not the washer. if the pulley doens't line up withe the notch won't it be off and be able to spin ?

it doesnt matter. that washer just bumps the belt when it tries coming off the gear. Put the round side of the washer on, put your keyway in the slot, and then put ur pulley on. all will be fine

Those dished washers don't need to be keyed to the shaft.

But your timing sprocket and your external pulley EACH have a key. Right?

should be one key, the crank and the pulley should be slotted for it. Just put the key on the crank, then put your pulley on so it lines up, your done

Different years have different arrangements. His photo shows a key in the timing sprocket, & that key isn't long enough to extend out to the external pulley. Besides, the dished washer doesn't have a slot, so a single long key wouldn't fit.

exactly, the key doesn't extend long enough to reach the pulley. so im wondering if the pulley will slip if there is no key in place.

Then you're missing a key. There's one key already in place for the toothed timing sprocket, I can see it in your photo.

Then put on the dished washer. It doesn't need a key. Then the lower timing cover.

Now the 2nd key goes in place for the external crank pulley...

Better yet, whatever your engine is (exact year & model) go into hondaautomotiveparts.com & find the correct parts drawing. Even at a dealer, that key can't be too expensive...
