Default Timing Belt Question???

On a d16y8 engine how tight should the timing belt be??? When i followed the manual and allowed the tensioner to self tighten it was giving me too much slack on the front (radiator side). So, i just pulled the tensioner up by hand and tightened it. Is this ok?? I know b-series guys use aftermarket tensioners to eliminate slack. Any help is appreciated???

I've been told that you should have no more than 1/4" deflection

how are you coming to the conclusion that its too loose? can you slide it off the gear after tensioning it? too tight is very bad, it'll break.

the question applies for both engine layouts...do you check for deflection between those gears?

the water pump and the cam gear. essentially the back side of the belt not the front side.

I check both there and from the crank to the exhaust cam gear. Its usually about the same though if it tensioned correctly.
