Default timing belt question--Quick help needed

changing the timing belt on the junkyard engine i just got for my teg

crankshaft pulley is lined up w/ the mark, intake pulley is lined up w/ the mark...exhaust pulley is not, seems to be about 4 teeth off

old timing belt it still on

just take it off, line up the exhaust pulley, and put the new one on?
wouldn't the engine have run like crap?

is this a sign of something else wrong?

That may be the reason that the motor came to the junkyard in the first place. I might take the head off and take a peek at the valves or just do a compression and leak-down test to see if any of the valves are bent. Good luck
