Default timing belt problems?

i'm a noob and i'm not really sure if the timing belt may be the one to blame buuuuuut..

when my friend starts up his car the engine makes the loudest screeching noises. after the engine's fully started the screeching goes away. when this first started to happen, the noises were apparent for only a few seconds. now the engine screams for 10 secs at a time. i knoww... we should have jumped on it. but we're SO confused.

is his timing belt the cause of this?

Check the Alternator, Power steering and AC compressor belts.
Timing belts dont make screeching noises, the timing belt has teeth on it that mesh with a pully gear

PS haha you live like 10 min from me
