Default timing belt jumped off gears :o(

Hello-

Last night a friend and I were driving to go out, and he noted that all of a sudden his car lost power and would not respond.

The RPMs dropped to zero, the throttle did nothing. To try and get out of the way of trucks, we tried to shift to another gear and get out of the way.. we heard the RPMs rise but the gauge showed nothing.

We pulled over and noticed the timing belt was off the gears and a bit eaten up on the side of the belt. The tensioner and water pump have bits of shreaded belt on them.

Any ideas? I am thinking either the belt walked off the side of the gears (The valve cover has been cut for the cam gears) or a cam snapped. Hes got buddy club cams.

We're taking the head off today... hopefully this isnt too bad

the tensioner could have froze or the belt came in contact with some plastic. After you tear it apart you will find the cause. good luck

Good question. We got the head off today, there was NO damage to any piston or valve. The timing belt lost all of its teeth in one location, you can tell the belt wasnt spinning but the crank still was.

We were too tired to look at the tensioner, thats tomorrow's project. We did note a rattle coming from that area shortly prior to the loss of power.

We did however find this:

They are buddy club cam gears, this is the exhaust side that broke. We dont know if this happened before, or after the event or if it had any relevance to it whatsoever. There are still two out of four screw mounts so we dont know how severly this compromised the structural integrity of the gear... although it cant be good

Any input would be appreciated - we plan on contacting BC soon to see what their opinions are also.

Thanks!

Sebastian

We are very suprised about this problem, for all the cam pulleys that BUDDYCLUB sold all over the world we never had this problem before. This cam pully has been tested throughly on our race car and engine dyno. for numerous times and we believe it was not caused by quaility or design problem.
From the photos we strongly believe that the problem/damage was caused by the locking nuts which were not tightened properly . You can see that the position where the damaged occurred was different from the original locking positon.
So they become loose and when they became too weak to hold to the original positon, it let go suddenly and the sudden impact cause the cam pully to break.
( I was going to put up a photo to point out the position but dont now how to upload the image =.=").

Anyway , we like to be 100% sure about the cause of the problem.
Please contct to Kevin of BUDDYCLUB US ( TEL : 909-9239188) and send the damaged cam pulley back to us , we will send you a replacement unit.
We like to send the damaged one to Buddy Club Japan for further inspection to determine the cause of the problem.

If you have any problems or questions regarding the B engine,
you can always email us for advice and we are very happy to serve you.
