ticking under load

my friend's vr6 gti has a ticking on the driverside that increases as he pushes the gas. When he lightly pushes the clutch in, the noise goes away. The car drives normal. Any ideas on the problem? thanks

Sounds like axle maybe.

Does it do it in turns too, or just while going straight, or only in turns?

Could be detonation.

yeah, it's on the transmission side. we're now pretty sure it's the throwout bearing
