TDC on a b18a
ok first time doin this...
Before i put the head on the block i check for where TDC would be for cyl. 1. Basically that little groove where you put the key in to hold the crank pulley down is facing straight up when no. 1 is at TDC. So i set it there and bolted the head on. lookin good.
Later, just to see how it looks, i stuck my CTR crank pulley on there. There is a white mark on the pulley that im told is supposed to be a TDC mark, but it sits waaay away from the groove. so is there something im not aware of here?

i dont think so, cuz like i said, before the head was on, i rotated the crank by hand, and when #1 and 4 were at TDC, the little tooth on the end of the crank was straight up. but the CTR pulleys white mark is not where that little tooth is.
How far off is the white mark on the pulley from pointer?
You do know that it's really hard to eyeball it to exactly TDC, don't you? Even if you're looking for the middle of the TDC dwell, it's still really hard to get it exactly on TDC.
This is how it should look with the #1 and #4 pistons set to TDC +/- no more than 1 degree using a positive piston stop and degree wheel/pointer.

ok i figured out where TDC is, got the belt on, but the only way i could get the belt on was to adjust the cams slightly, meaning the two marks arent lined up perfectly. heres what i mean. This is when the crank is pretty close to TDC...
and heres for those of you with bad eyes. ...

see how theyre off? this isnt normal, right? TIA....

They're a little retarded. I've seen it on a couple of motors, ranging from B16's to B18C's (mine included)....your's is the first B18A/B I've seen do that.
Mine were ~3 degrees retarded. I had to degree the cams in to true them back to (0,0).

your off a tooth
...do you have an integra service manual...
put cams at tdc..
use some small stubby screwdrivers and slide them in the holes on the top side of the cams..right behind the gears...that will hold them inplace
then put the belt around the crank
next, around the tensioner
then water pump.
now the exhaust gear
finially the intake...thats the tough part
it has to be installed "tightly" meaninf you might get frusterated.. it should line up perfectly!!!not half asses
whatever you do dont just put on adjustable cam gears and "make" it "look" right
have fun
