Tapping knock sensor on LS/Vtec???
I've never seen it done, but its worth a shoot.
And yes it can be done with the motor in.

Does the sensor itself touch the oil passage. Just wondering how a knock sensor works. Does it sense the knocking and pinging sounds coming from the engine or what. Installing the knock sensor requires to drill and tap and the scrap metal pieces going into the oil passage. thats why i need to know.
The spot you your arrow points to is the wrong location. The factory location is near the nipple on the water pipe. Just above the oil filter and on #3 cylinder. Drill and tap that spot, it doesnt go to any oil passages. I imagine its possible but its gonna be a pain in the *** to drill and tap it perfectly straight while its in the car. The spot on the second picture is a joke. If your trying to use the knock sensor, there's no point in putting it there.
The way the knock sensor works is, the piezo crystal inside it is sensitive to pressure. When it feels vibration from knockin/pinging, it produces a varying a/c voltage. The harder the vibe, the more voltage produced. ECU sees voltage and backs off timing. MAP sensors also use the same kind of crystal.
