Default Tachometer and Speedometer

OK, I have owned a 1994 EX civic 2 door for about a week now. When The RPM's get high, about 4 grand or so, the speedometer goes nuts. It jumps to like 100 mph and then drops andthen stays at zero for a while then returns to normal. Then for the tachometer; The engine does some sort of fuel cut at the end of 1st gear, about 38 mph. Now the catch is, it reads that the engine is at about 5500 RPMS. I believe that it should be saying something like 7200, but it's not. I am sure it is a d16z6, so it is the SOHC vtec and is revving that high, but the tach is wrong....HELP!!! WHAT is wrong with these gauges?

Not likely I'll know the answer to your question, but Honda used 2 or 3 different ways to drive the speedo & tach over the years.

I'm pretty sure the tachometer signal is a blue wire from the distributor back to the dash. Look for loose/dirty/corroded connections.

Maybe it still had a speedometer cable in '94 (not sure)? Otherwise there's a VSS on the tranny where you can check for screwed up wiring.
