Surging Idle? How-To Tech Article...(56k beware)

How can I bleed the coolant without changing the fluid? I have a 1990 Accord LX, 4 door.
Thanks.

Hi,
Are you saying that bleeding your coolant is not necessary after this procedure?
Thanks.

I can't find the radiator funnel in any of my nearby auto part stores. I have tried Autozone and Kragen. So far driving it without bleeding, the car seems fine. Coolant warm up and fan on periodically. The system seems fine. I have not yet to drive on the freeway. I'll do that when I go to work later on. Let's just hope it does not cause overheating with small air bubbles. I am going to have my coolant change this Friday any way, which is 4 days away.
One problem I have noticed today was when I start the engine totally cold this morning, my idle was only around 1000rpm instead 1500rpm as before. However, the car warms up fine and idle went down to around 600rpm steady. Driving, braking fast, stopping, or shifting, the idle is steady. I am going to change out the hose clamps on the FITV later stop the small leaks.
Thanks.

hey i think this is the prob im having but i have a blox 70mm tb with no inlets for the coolant hoses so i just have a screw for my fitv i have funny idle at 2k i will bog back to 1k then back up again dont know what to do.
i have the same problem as everyone else pretty much.i have a 99 em1, i have had a cel on for like almost a year for the IACV, i just replaced it and still getting the same cel, i cleaned out the PCV, adjusted the idle adjustment screw, the only thing i havent tried was checking the FITV, but my car doesnt have the FITV on the bottem of the TB like most civics have. there is a coolant line that runs from, the main coolant line to the block, to the TB then the outlet side goes to the IACV. there is nothing to remove tho, the nipples for the coolant lines are all one piece with the TB. Do i just not have a FITV or is it located else where?
Also when i took my intake off and opened the throttle body it looks as if there is oil or somethin black and wet on the inside of the intake manifold.
anything would help, need to fix ASAP to pass Inspection.

had issue on my 97 ek4 (b16a2 0b2a) for about 2 years now and gotten worse, really fed up with it
gonna go through as many steps as poss in this thread over next several days
i assume from what ive read here that my car wont have the fitv or its located somewhere else ?

Hi guys, posting on my brother's account because I don't have time to swap over right now. The images in the original post have been missing for at least a year due to the picture hosting site closing. I just found all the original photos from this write-up on my old hard drive the other day, so I'll rehost them elsewhere and get em back up before the weekend hopefully.
Glad this thread is still helping people at least

This is a pefect example of how helpful this site is. I just did this procedure to my FITV and the surging stopped. The info is greatly appreciated. Nice job on the step by step write up.
My idle seems to surge when the car is warm not when cold. Can anyone give me an indication to what this could mean? Ive cleaned the FITV and EACV
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance

i did this on my 92 si, and in the winter when its 20 degrees or below my car will idle fine but if the throttle is touched before the car is warm the rpm's will drop really fast and sometimes stall the car.
just beware. did fix my slight surge and made my idle smoother.

By the way thats me shutting the engine off at the end, its not stalling or anything.

bump up! this thread is helpful... i didnt even know that FIT valve even existed! now i can give this advice to another honda owner and look like i known it lol!thankz honda_power69 you the man.
the idle light weight fluctuates up and down? is it normal if the idle surges under grand?
I like the idea to clean the fitv but I got something interesting. Mine does the surge from 1-2k non stop little after I start it up. NON STOP. I sprayed around the TB and found one spot that makes the motor pick up like crazy . I changed the tb gasket and it still does it. When I spray the fluid on the specific side of the TB you can seee and hear it suck the fluid in on top of hearing the motor speed up. Would it be a good idea to RTV the spot that leaks? I know a bunch of race teams that rtv their intakes. Seems cheap but sometimes the moment calls. Just wanna see if anyone else has done this...
