Stupid: oil changes....?
Recently got my 99 em1 and i want to start using good oil. But i was thinking about it, is an oil change at a shop cheaper than doing it myself? Places around here charge around 20 to 25 for an oil change with filter. If i want to use better oil like penzoil or mobil on my em1, what kind of numbers am i looking at plus filter? I know, such a noob question, im sorry...
well oil is oil but its like sams club soda and coke there almost taste the same but dont.
why not spend the extra 5 bucks on mobil oil and a oem filter

Mobil 1 $5 a quart + OEM Filter around 7 bucks i think.
$27.
I think most places will do a M1 oil change (without the filter) for around 40. Now how do you prove they actually put M1 in? Make them give you the empty bottles. Sure they could fake it, but instead of going through that trouble, theyll probably just pour the M1.

I wouldn't take my car where I was worried whether they actually put the synthetic oil into it but you have a point. You can always just say you want to read the bottle.
If they store their oil in bulk storage (like big 55+ gallon drums) and use a pump to get it out you might want to consider either bringing your own in bottles or asking for it from bottles.
Out of the 1 quart of oil about 2 ounces are additives and the rest is oil. A lot of the additives are heavy metals that will sink to the bottom of the drum over time and be sucked up first. Conversely, there are some lighter additives which rise to the surface and get picked up mostly when the barrel is almost empty. This skews the balance of the additive package so, by the time you have your oil changed, you don't know what you are getting.
Whenever you are about to pour a bottle of oil into an engine it is wise to shake the bottle like you would a paint can or anything like that to mix up the additives with the oil so they don't get left as residue in the bottle.
Try pouring a bottle of oil thats been sitting for a week without disturbing it and then look into the bottle. It'll look like there are specks of dirt in the bottom. If I didn't know what it was I would be saying, 'Damn, I'm glad I didn't pour that **** in my engine'.
