Speedometer going nuts at times
Yeah...my speedometer has been acting weird for a few days. I had a problem with starting my car about a week ago so I had a friend help diagnose the problem. He checked some "ignition wires" under the steering wheel compartment with a voltmeter. After he couldn't figure anything out he put everything back together and that's when my speedometer started to act weird. It would go up to 20mph and then just stay there when I turn the key to the "ON" position (I haven't even started the engine yet). Funny thing is, sometimes it would work normally when I'm driving but most of the time it doesn't. My odometer works when it works normally otherwise it doesn't work as well. I think it might be the vehicle speed sensor but I'm not sure. It worked fine before he checked the wires and stuff. Could it be an electrical problem? and is this fixable?...Any help is appreciated. Thanks. The car is a 96 civic by the way.

Haven't you ever heard that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one?
Its your cluster. Get a new one and your problem will be solved.

My cousin had a cheap aftermarket cluster in his car that did that. I did him a favour and got a stock one from the wreckers and it worked perfectly. Check your cluster.

i didn't realize there was a fuse for the vss. i've been having my speed sensor go whack for a while now, but i've got an extra one to replace it with.
that of course begs the question...anyone know how to replace the damn thing??? (in the case that it's not just the fuse) i've already spent enough money on my car this month.

well if you haven't thrown a check engine...no guaranties but it may not be the vss. it throws a code 17 i believe for the check engine. i diagnosed mine a while back.

well, me and my friend both had problems with your gauges
mine was just the gauge, i replaced it with another one, and never had problems
his on the other hand, is the vss, because I tossed his gauge into my car and it worked, back into his, nope, and also, sometimes code 17 (i think) pops up, which is the vss

Clean the connectors on the vss and the wiring harness plug that attaches to it. I used a bottle of some electrical contact cleaner and it cleared up all my wierd speedo issues. The VSS connector faces upwards so it is really easy for moisture to collect inside it and cause corrosion...
