Default speed sensor input voltage

if i am reading my helms correctly vss input is 0-5 v?

can anyone confirm this?
would 12v burn up the motor in the odometer?

VSS output is a 0-5v pulsed DC waveform.

Would 12v burn up the odo motor - probably.

so it is regulated by faraday's law, and at lower speeds smaller v is outputted, and higher speeds more v correct?

No - it always puts out a 0-5v waveform - its the frequency that increases to indicate a greater vehicle speed.

oh ok, could you simulate it with (3) 1.5v batteries?just curious so i know im understanding it right

It wouldn't be accurate. If the gauge has an integrator built into it, which takes that pulsing DC and turns into a voltage that is proportional to it, then the fact that it never reached 5v will cause inaccuracy. You would also need a switch to simulate the on/off states, but your hand couldn't keep up that fast.
