SOHC VTEC head swap
Just wanted to know what do i need besides getting the head itself to do the miniswap. I have so far is the full head w/ all plugs, sensors, intake manifold, fuel rail, injectors, basically the top end of a d16y8 for my y7 block. I've been told that i need a new head gasket..duh and valve cover seal. Can i reuse my y7's timing belt b/c i just replaced a new timing belt like 5 months ago, or the y8's is different than the y7? well let me noe..thanks in advance.
ok, im getting the y8's timing belt, head gasket, and head seal today. But i also needed a wire harness for my 99 EX 5spd ecu, i found a guy that is selling a '96 JDM itr wire harness for sale, will it fit on to my ecu?? will it make a diff. b/c of the wire harness came off of a right-hand drive teg.
The timing belt is the same. So is the head gasket.
I have reused the Y7 headgasket numerous times with no problem. Do as you see fit.
Wouldn't say that you need the ITR harness. Get the EX ECU, and add the three wires that you need...

i wouldn't recomend reusing a headgasket, once it has been tightened down and has gotten hot from use you stand the greater chance of blowing it. 50 bucks or so reassures you that it wont blow cause it is new.
good luck.
good luck.

I already knew that. I just picked up the new head gasket, timing belt, and the valve gasket today from honda under $70. All OEM, no discounts, i thought it would be more than that. but i got a good deal so im not complaining..hehe. i also picked up a full vtec wire harness on an ex and found the ecu at another junkyard. 6 hrs on hunting for the parts n FINALLY found it, i am officially BROKE. Wish me luck tonight on the head swap.

With the ex harness, you don't need luck, Just be as mechanically inclined as possible, and don't rush through it!

NO, you do NOT want to use any OBD2 integra harness at all. None of them will work on an EK civic because of their 2-piece design (breaks off at the passenger side shock tower). EK civic's all use 1-piece engine harness which runs from the engine bay, through the firewall, straight down to the ecu, without any breakoff points.
You'll either have to reuse your Y7 harness or find an EX harness, respective to the year of your civic (96-98 or 99-00).
If you reuse your Y7 harness, you'll have to perform a couple wiring fixes & changes.
1) obviously add vtec wiring
2) perform the IACV fix
Reason for IACV fix is because the Y8 manifold uses a 2-wire IACV, wheres your Y7 had a 3-wire IACV. If you don't perform this fix, your car will idle like crap and you'll get a check engine light/code #14
check out my wiring diagrams here:
if you own a 96-98 civic click here -> image 1 & image 2
if you own a 99-00 civic click here -> image 1 & image 2
If you get a 5-speed EX engine harness, you do not need to perform the wiring bits I just mentioned.
If you haven't yet, read the links MMULLER & BauleyCivic posted up.

oh yea, sorry forgot to update but i didn't get the 96 itr harness. i found a 98 ex civic wire harness on my 99 civic. everything hooks up, but vtec is not kickin' in, my tach, and speedo isn't working.

...sigh...
ok, so you have a 99 civic eh?
The problem now, is that the 98 EX harness isn't fully compatible with your 99 civic, even though it seems like it is. The ecu plug "B" is not used with a 98 EX engine harness, but plug "C" is (refer to my diagrams). Plug "B" is an important plug that all 99-00 civic's need.
If you can, try getting a hold of a 99-00 civic EX or Si coupe engine harness instead of using the 98 EX engine harness.

i've tried everywhere, n can't find the 99-oo wire harness bro. but i got everything workin again, except for my tach and the vtec. i've been told that once i get the tach workin' vtec will kick in. b/c they work together or something, but anyway i got the tach to work half ***, i can red line n the tach will only read approx. 1,000rpm-1,300rpm. any help or suggestions would be greatly be appreciated. thanks
