D16Y7----->D16Y8 minime. Wiring issues?
Hey guys, I know I know, I already searched, but I was wondering what all the wiring issues were in involved in the d16y8 minime head swap on a d16y7. I will have the ecu off of a 98 ex for my 97. Do i just use the stock harness or should i use the ex harness. Also, i heard something about a knock sensor not working on a dx. any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys.
You can use your stock wiring harness. You will have to run three wires, one for the VTEC solenoid, one for the VTEC oil pressure switch, and one for the knock sensor. I know the spot to plug them into for OBD-I, but not for OBD-II...so hopefully someone else will reply. As for the knock sensor, I dont really know what to do, but my good buddy b16a ferio pointed me towards c-speed's LSVTEC writeup, and they had some interesting info about relocating the knock sensor...check it out (its for B-series, but most of the stuff should still apply):

Pictured here is the back of a B18a block. Notice there is no knock sensor. The knock sensor came on the 92+ VTEC engines only. If your block doesn't have a knock sensor, you will need to located a hole for one:
Pictured here is the B17 block with the stock location for the knock sensor:
On a B18a block we chose to remove one of the mounting bolts for the alternator bracket and use this as the new location for the Knock sensor:
Using a 10.9 mm drill bit, opened up the hole on the bracket and the block. Then carefully tap the hole with a 12 mm x 1.25 thread pitch tap. Be sure to clean up the shavings and then screw the knock sensor. This will keep your ECU from throwing any codes:
Here you can see the knock sensor in its new location:

thanks for the reply, so for the y8 all i need is 3 wires run? i think for the knock sensor i can get one off of a y8 block and just find somwhere on the y7 block to put it in. As for the knock sensor, how do i wire that up? will it be easier to just get a 96-98 engine harness? will that include the knock sensor wires, vtec oil pressure switch, and vtec solenoid wires?
you could do that, if you could find one for cheap. But if you cant, wiring is a sinch...I just dont know how to wire up OBDII...for OBDI its running 3 wires and plugging them into one of the ECU plugs, very simple stuff

also does anyone know if i can use a automatic y8 wiring harness with a 5 speed, i know i would have an extra harness haging by the ecu

you have to put it in there...you use the method that I posted earlier of mounting the knock sensor in the alternator bracket
i dont think the y7 comes with a knock sensor, thats why when you minime you have to wire the ecu to read a knock sensor coming off of the block somewhere.
So basically its as simple as enlarging a hole in the block, and installing a knock sensor,, and then wiring it to the ECU? Sounds dope to me

sounds like that is what is gonna have to happen. so can anyone confirm the 3 wires that need to be added to a y7 harness to make it compatible with a p2p ecu and ex head/manifold?

back from the dead...
we're doing a mini me and we're stumped with problems but i just came across this thread and their is a lot of talk about knock sensor....
we are using a d16z6 head... d15y7 block... do we NEED the knock sensor? and do we need to cut the orange wire from the IACV? i dunno crap about this swap except what i've read in the past 10 mins and put my hands on today so excuse the n00b questions...
thanks
