DIP socket - static connections that both connect to and hold the chip in place. advantage = cheap (~$0.40)
disadvantage = may require a tool to remove chip

ZIF sicket - (zero insertion force) - moveable connections that release the chip upon removal and insertion, yet clamp down on the pins of the chip to hold it in place and connect to it.
advantage = chip can be removed and inserted with "zero force"
disadvantage = more $$ (~$6.00)

ZIFs are the only way to go IMO, I don't even use DIP sockets anymore.

Another thing to note is that the only tool needed to remove a chip from a DIP socket is a flathead screwdriver. Sorry if this was painfully obvious.
