Snap on tools/valvespring install questions
hey guys --- okay. im getting my skunk2 valvesprings, retainers, and valves here before soon, and im trying to gather all install info prior to their arrival. in order to install the valvesprings and retainers, i need to remove the head correct?
or i could buy a snap on tool that would eliminate that process...which tool do i buy (as in the part number or name)? i just hear itll take about 1/4 of the time with the snap on tool, and ill avoid obvoiusly having to replace the headgasket and bolts. thanks so much guys.

To replace valves, there is no getting around pulling the head. If you are just replacing springs, retainers, and/or seals, it can be done with the Snap-on tool. It helps to use a leak-down tester on each cylinder as you do it to keep the valves from falling. Do one cylinder at a time, and rotate the engine to TDC on compression for the cylinder that you are doing. If a valve drops, it wont fall far, the piston at TDC prevents this. If you drop a valve and the piston is not at TDC, you will be pulling the head.

I've got one you can borrow since you're so close to me. It's only about 3.5 hours to Cinnciinnnatttii. [Editor's note: I never could spell the city's name worth a one-legged cockroach.]
IM me and maybe I can help you out.
I hope you're also getting the timing belt maintenance stuff outta the way while that stuff is off.

BTW, if it's the leak down tester your wanting, I get a gov. rate of 25% off Snapon tools. I can easily get you the part within a week if you'd like to go that route. I'm an auto tech, and this is my next tool to purchase.

Just make sure it's not during my winter break b/c I'll be in Los Angeles for Christmas until the LA Auto Show weekend. I'm also not a proponent of winter carport installs....I'm tropical peoples.
If I can't come along, then I can makes arrangements to loans you the tool, as longs as I don't needs it in the shop...which I probably won't.
If you do get the valves, you'll defintely have to remove the head. At that point, you'll be buying a few more parts (head gasket, head studs, valve guides). It'll be about another $300 on the tab. Unless you really want to get those parts too, it's not worth it.
BTW, you can use a compression tester line to attach to the air hose fitting to pressurize the cylinder.
