smoking CX....
I bought a 92 CX about a month ago ... The motor is pouring smoke out the tailpipe when you rev it.. The smoke is blue so its definately burning oil.. I changed the oil hoping it would help ..put 20w-50 in it and still smokes like a freight train... Its not smoking at idle ... The engine has 153,000 miles on it ...im gonna have to start driving it because i sold my CRX and Im hoping its just valve guides maybe just needs the head reworked ...Is there any way to tell if its in the head or in the rings?? Would a compression check tell? And does anyone know what this thing should read on a compression gauge?? Im hoping its the head not as expensive ,since im gonna be doing a swap sometime in the near future ...But if its the rings im gonna be walking for awhile waste of money to fix the rings when that engine is going to the dump in the next 6-12 months...Any help will be greatly appreciated ..thanks ...
If it's a:
D16 SOHC - 185 psi @ 250 rpm (after warm-up).
Differances between Cylinders - 28 psi
Note - Use a full charged battery...
Probably, a "Leak Down Test" would be alot more informative...

Yes, get a leakdown tester. Pull all 4 plugs and connect it to each cylinder. Put the cylinder being tested at TDC. When you hook it up and pressurize it, if you feel air coming out of another spark plug hole then your rings are bad. If you hear air from the exhaust or intake then its a problem with your valves. If its not coming from either intake, exhaust or another sparkplug hole then I would suspect the guides.

ok ..I was listening to my engine running ...and the valves are really loud...Since the valves are so loud is there more of a possibilty the smoke is because of the valves or valve guides...GOD i hope its just in the head...Anyone tell me how to do a leak down test..what tools do i need???
Thanks
Thanks
Now,if it is the head,im guessing since it is alot of smoke, and you are hearing alot of valve train noise...it could also be that your oil pump is going out.Unless all of your valves are out of adjustment, not enough oil up in the head could cause a louder valve train and premature valve guide and seal wear.
