SMOG in so cal
i got a q. most mechanics don't notice the jdm motors n stuff like that. i did a search online and i couldn't yield any results, but HOW exactly do they smog? check vin, check plates, check ecu, check all that crap? b/c usually mechanics just open the hood, look if there is an air box or not, look for anything that looks totally non-stock [my headers have a heat shield], and then throw it on the dyno n test the emissions? think i can get away with it?
here's the problem. i'm running a ek [obd2] and i am wired as obd1. how much of a problem will this cause me? if i am going to fail, why? what else do they do besides the check on emissions w/ a sniffer?

In California, we have to do an OBD2 check when we smog an OBD2 vehicle. The smog machine hooks up to the Data Link Connector and checks the MIL status and various other OBD2 functions. You will fail if you are running OBD1. The smog technician might not realize the problem during the initial inspection, but when he has to do the OBD2 check, you will fail. Sorry.
To add......where to start.....
Your JDM engine must have the USDM equivalent smog equipment and a USDM ECU of the same year.
These guys have some crazy documentation and diagrams of what goes where. The JDM 4-1 header is not smog legal either. They have detailed pictures and can tell right away if one is legal or not.
THe bright side is you get two tests from a Smog ref. (You are going to be sent to a smog ref from the smog station so you might as well expect that)
On the first test if they fail you, you are given a sheet of what you need to fix on your next visit. If you follow that sheet they will pass you. AND you can then spend the 8 dollars for the bar sticker and everytime a police officer pulls you over you can just show them the BAR sticker and they can't do a damn thing.

1.visual - heh. to ur imagination
2.no cat - that's right, i'm running a test pipe!
fail emissions for sure!
3.obd1 wiring - b/c wiring obd2 has more sensors...i don't like. and it's a 98 spec motor
4.no egr
