simple question about intermediate shaft
does the metal ring/shield that is on the end of the intermediate shaft that goes into the diff HAVE to be on there? it's the one that would sit next to the diff seal...

I would make sure mine is there just because I'm a clean freak, and don't want crap splashing up into the seal, but no, you don't NEED to have it....
