Default shimming vtec oil pump

Im going to shim my oil pump for more pressure, should i place the shim inside the relief valve, or on the top of the sealing bolt?

on the bottom of the oil pump theres going to be an allen head. Undo that and inside there should be a spring and a piston. Put a washer or 2 in there to increase oil pressure in the motor.about 1mm will bring it 2 around 80 psi at wot

The idea is to push the spring harder to get more oil pressure.. So putting a washer in between the bolt and the spring will bump it up..

Correct, however there is a very fine line between adequate shim, and too much shim

Omniman told me to use a 1-1.5mm shim

Yep.. On my B16A motor there was a crush washer in between the bolt and the pump so I just took that out and used some hondabond to stop it from leaking.. Removing the washer bumped the pressure up..

how much of a pressure increase did you get when removing the crushwasher?

Anyone weight the benefits of pressure VS the loss of volume???

I dont think there will be a significant loss of volume, as the shim keeps the relief valve from bypassing the oil back to the sump.

Agreed.. If your getting higher pressure at the bearings and at the gauge then since you didnt change the clearance of the bearings then you had to increase flow..

I was going through the same problem with my vtec not working because lack of oil presure. It turned out the vtec solinoid screen was gunked up with metal shavings and wasent letting oil through. Its alot easer than pulling the oil pan and everything I would try it first before I start shimming stuff

pump is shimmed, oil pressure is 78 psi at 3-4k and 80-85 psi all the way to 9500, Looks like it solved my problem.
