Default Setting timing..

i just finished up a build, and i want to make sure i am setting the timing correctly..I lined up the gear on the crank with the mark on the oil pump, and lined up both cam gears (pointing up) and the slits on the sides are lined up also. is that all that is required to set timing?? I was reading something about lining up the marks on the flywheel?? and what about the distributor do i need to point it to the #1 cyl.?? and if so how??

thanks alot
