Default Serious tranny problem, 01 MDX

A freind was driving her MDX about 60mph, heard a noise just as the front wheels locked up. Tires have flat spots to prove it. One of the other techs tore it down and found this:

Looks like 2nd gear got a little hot.

Cracked the case too.

Anybody seen anything like this? I think it's the same tranny as the Pilot, weve sold alot of them and havn't seen a single transmission problem with one.

Were thinking they got it stuck in the snow at some point and the heat weakened the gears.

Well, turns out to be yet another transmission problem from Honda.
From service bulletin 04-021 for Odyseys and Pilots:

Certain operating conditions can result in heat buildup
between the countershaft and secondary shaft second
gears in the automatic transmission. Without enough
oil flow to dissipate heat, prolonged operation under
these conditions can eventually result in decreased
material strength. In higher mileage vehicles, this can
result in gear tooth chipping or, in very rare cases, gear
breakage.
In most cases, transmission noise will indicate a
problem, however it is possible for the transmission to
become locked without warning. A locked transmission
could result in a crash.

Owned yourself, but at least now you know. Is this a recall issue or just warranty?

How's that? Yes, it's a recall.

wow Honda has really been getting bad with their reliability nowadays... maybe it's because those two cars are manufactured here?

These damn companies nowdays are trying to cut corners to make more profits. In the end they just f*ck themselves over by having to recall and fix all these problems. Once you lose your reputation you can definitely expect to see a drop in sales. It's sad to see this happen because imports in general have the rep for being very reliable. ****, pretty soon we'll start seeing employee discount sales from Honda and Acura.
