another tranny noise
Well, I dont know much about transmissions, but could this problem be synchros?:
While shifting into ONLY 3rd gear it kind of grinds, not a bad grind, just a soft one. But if I shift slowly (hold in clutch for a second longer, then shift) it doesn't make the noise. Could this be a clutch problem, not fully engaging? or is it a transmission problem? I've heard about people having synchronizer problems but I'm not sure if this is a sign.

use some GM syncomesh, it will get rid of it as long as its in the beginning stages of the synco going bad...
it wont fix it, but it will better lubricate. and you might wanna cut down on the fast shifting, your gonna wear it down twice as fast. Give the sncro enough time to grab and it should last you for a while.

yes it is (more than likely), basicly what happens is when you shift your sncryos work as teeth grabbing the gear and holding it in place until you shift to the next one and so on..
When you shift slowly your giving the snycros more time to grab the gear making it not jam like it does when you shift quickly..Gotta figure, when sycros are bad they're broken..
Its like sticking a fork in your mouth with a bent tip, chances are your gonna poke yourself and bleed if you eat to fast.. LOL

Ill tell you this much, it would be a hell of alot cheaper to change the fluid to syncomesh rather than dropping the entire tranny for nothing if the fork is not the problem..
Narrow the possibilites down

i dont usually "slam gears." this usually occurs while shifting at normal speeds. its just that when i shift really slow, slower than normal, i hear no grinding.

nope, but it will get him by under normal driving conditions... Trannys arent cheap to work on so its a nice alternative to keep your mind at ease.

plus, we all forgot to mention... That when Syncs go out.... Its usually 3rd gear to go out first. Why i do not know for sure, but I think its the most common gear to be in for city driving and that probably causes more stress to the components.

The resaon 3rd goes out is due to not shifting properly.
2-3 shift is up-right-up, not a straight shot at a slight angle.
Trannys are cheap to work on, worn alum. 1-2 ******* forks causes most 3rd gear grinds. The reason is you just barely out of second and trying to jam third.
Also weak motor mounts will allow the motor/tranny to rock away during the shift and your chasing third gear.
Yes, D tranny Guru.

yeah that is true...even on my gsr tranny.. Funny how you could go straight just about and feel as if your doing nothing wrong.
