I've seen weird stuff happen with the TPS just as you have... Most cars don't run well at all when there's no TPS reference (in fact they all shouldn't) but I have seen a seen a few cars that somehow run without it... A long while back my friend's EH2 with a Z6 motor starting having an irratic idle (up down up down up down) but if he pulled the TPS for a few seconds and then put it back on, it would idle perfect... After it became a pain in the *** to pull the TPS connector every time he started his car he just left it off... It still managaed to run just fine, nothing like what you would expect... In fact it ran just as any normal car would... Bottom line is an ECU needs a TPS reference so it really is needed... To this day I still don't know how his car ran fine...

his car sounds alot like mine...i've done what he used to do by pulling the TPS and he started the car and then putting it back in...thats just the same as pulling it an leaving it..the ecu isnt going to recognize it anyways until you turn off the car and turn it back on...but yea i don't know how my car is running without it...i thought the ecu needs it to know where the throttle is at so it can idle...

my 88 dx has a code 7 for the TPS.......if the check engine light is off the engine will idle kinda weird and jerk while driving. If the check engine light is on it will run fine. Im not putting any money into it cause i have a B16 waiting to drop in. Just thought id share my TPS experience.

Well, disconnecting the TPS probably puts it in open-loop mode, so it is just running off maps...

What ya think?

hmmmm this brings ideas to mind
if it causes your car to run off of maps, then wouldn't it run better fi you had a tuned ecu such as hondata or ems because then it would run off of tuned maps fi it was dyno tuned or wide band tuned. it might not be all that good for stock ecu's but with a tuning system wouldn't it be better????

hondata and such still use closed loop, they have different maps, but they still use input from sensors to adjust timing/fuel BASED on the maps.
Running open loop mode will affect drivability and gas mileage

I know in hondata you have the option to enable/disable closed-loop altogehter.
