Default Rubber boot covering the b*tch pin

On B- and D-series transmissions where the shift rod attaches to the transmission with that darned b!tch pin, there is a metal shaft that goes into the transmission case. Is there some sort of seal there that keeps fluid from coming out? I assume the rubber boot that covers that joint doesn't hold in fluid, because mine is torn completely into 2 pieces, but I don't see any evidence of fluid loss.

I will be ordering a new boot and b!tch pin this week. As of now, that shaft going into the tranny case is exposed when in 1st, 3rd, or 5th gears. That won't be a big problem, will it?

Also, anyone know where I can find an 8.5 mm punch? I'd like to make this job as painless as possible. Please don't suggest other tools I can use. I have tried all kinds of other tools and they're always a PITA. I'd like to actually use an 8.5mm punch like the Helms manual shows. I checked at Sears but I don't believe they had one in that size.

Get a 1/4" roll pin punch - it is like a normal non tapered punch but it has a ball on the end that fits inside the roll pin so it can't walk around while hitting it - I got mine from snap-on - I don't understand what your question is about the gear selection shaft but it sounds to be working normal.

I'm just making sure that it won't be a problem having that shaft exposed for awhile since the rubber boot that normally covers it is completely torn in 2 pieces.

i think that rubber boot/seal thing is just to keep dirt/water away from the pin so it does not rust/corrode.

The boot just keeps it from rusting. I have a trans sitting in my garage right now that was missing the boot for a long period of time and the linkage is SEVERELY rusted.
