hey, was just wondering what noise the rod bearings make....ive got a ticking coming from my motor, but it doesnt happen constantly, its stops every now and then....was wondering what it was...

Not your rods making noise. Very light intermittant ticking can be injectors. Valve adj should be more constant ticking noise.

i dont think its the injectors cause i didnt notice the pinging until i over revved from a miss-shift.....im thinkin i just need a valve adjustment...but dont quote me on the miss shift caused the pinging, it just so happened i started noticing the pinging after that happened....im not sure if it was pinging before...i think it was...just not as bad...Not your rods making noise. So it's now pinging and not ticking? Do valve adj and check for broken springs or retainers. Do compression check. Check tension on timing belt. Look at everything.
If you need help, you got to give helpful info...like noise came on after missed shift

if it was a bad rod bearing you would hear some pretty loud knocking...you probably need a valve adjustment. set the clearences to the minium spec and they should be fine..........

what is the difference between a ping and a tick? i never can tell....
Thread Starter
db's as in decibals? so i need a decibal meter to tell if its a ticking or a pinging? that sounds kinda rediculous...

LOL...nice, Earl!

King Kong: Pinging is a common name for detonation. It's likely that your valves need some work if this problem arose after a mis-shift.

oh bubba. let the car get completely cold and check the vavle clearances with the feelers and go every 90 and write down what they are at. do .006 or .007
on intake and .008 on exhaust. chances are you might have had some valve contact on that missed shift. if the valve adjustment doesnt clear things up
missed shifts have claimed exhaust valves a few times in my car...
this is the way we bend our valves
bend our valves
bend our valves...
sorry man

Get it checked out check everything I blew a rod bearing and junked my engine. for me it sounded like a ping thru out 3k-4k rpms then the ping was more constant. i thought it was just my oilpan knocking or, heat sheilds knocking somewhere. needless to say it wasn't and may now i'm the proud owner of a b18c1....

I just broke a B18C1 unfortunately... slag is available one main and one rod bearing were wiped. the rest of the block is solid.

i would also like to know what it would sound like if your rod bearings were making noise.

it goes...
naka naka naka naka
at idle
and when you sap the throttle...
it goes...
nakanakanakakankanakanaknakaKNOCKONAKNOCKAnakanaka
then back to the sound at idle:
same as above.
there is a place in the RPM band where it may become muted, but
dont fool yourself. the longer this goes, you can wipe your crank
and have to start over with a new one.... bad bad bad monkey
it sounds like someone let a large marble loose in your motor

it dose sound like that for real , well kinnda mine did it though 3000 to 4000 rpm and it sounded like lil kids in my motor with a hammer , of course i slung a rod bearing and bent my crank shaft and lock it in the motor in my civic d16 hatch, but now im happy with my civic b18 hybrid hatch ,

I dunno.. when I spun a main rod bearing it sounded like my valves
then when I drained my oil.. I found chunks of metal..
drain your oil look for metal...

MikeSarr_GSR, your so onomatopoetic

thats a great euphamism
anywhoo, if you had bent valves you would not have bearing
material in your oil pan. thats what bearings look like when they
reach the service limit. they "spin" or shave off
