Default Replacing Piston Rings??

I doubt I could tackle this job myself but how much do you think a machine shop would charge for something like that on a 99LS motor..?? I got a friend whos pulling his motor and putting in a Type R ..I can get his 99 LS engine/tranny/mounts/axles/ecu for $800 but I just wanted to know what kinda prices for repair would I be looking at to replace the piston rings? Anyhelp is appreciated..

Why would you need to replace the rings on such a new motor? Is it smoking? Loosing compression?
