removing/installing engine from bottom
When removing or installing an engine from the bottom of a vehicle what do you put the engine on when taking it out or putting it in?
I used a wooden table with wheels on it. That way you can just roll it out from under the car once you get finished. I have used two floor jacks but I do not recommend that because the motor will most likely slide off the jacks.
ya be careful if you use jacks, make sure you have alot of hands around if you do use jacks. I lower mine usually onto a wooden pallet and then you can drag it around your shop if youd like. Goodluck
For those without a lift, what jack would you recommend to install an engine using this method? I am not sure which one would have the necessary lift height without being excessively expensive.
I am thinking that a farm jack / hi-lift like the one below might work without breaking the bank but heard questionable things about the safety of those type of jacks.

Thats what I use. Tip the engine exhaust side down and roll it out.

Not the best pic but you can kinda see it. I used a square wooden dolly on wheels that I bought from Harbor Freight. I lowered the car down all the way until the motor was sitting on the dolley, then jacked it up as high as I could and rolled it out.
i use an old tire, but in retrospect...the moving wooden dolly seems to be a better option. im sure you could take some measurements (if you have spare time) and create a custome engine stand on wheels that sits perfect so when you put it back in, it will be easy as pie. ive always wanted to do it, but im really lazy.
I have always wondered, how do you guys get the car high enough to get the motor out from the bottom?
I always pulled them with an engine lift form the top. I guess if you had some truck jack stands and a big *** jack, you could get it high enough. I would be scared to have the car lifted that high and get under it.
Damn earthquakes.
...or maybe you guys are using a shop lift.

When i used to do it that way, i would lower the whole thing down on a floor jack and once all the way down, slide it of the jack onto the ground, then id have to jack th front of the car up a bit and slide it out.
