Default removing heatshield

Yesterday the mildly annoying buzz at 3k rpms turned into a full out mind-numbing rattle at every engine speed. So I take a look and what I guess is the heat shield around the cat is broken and the thing is shaken all over the place. Two questions. Is this thing important? Does it matter if I remove it? And how do I remove it, the bolts look really tough to get at. btw, my car is a 90 integra LS.

I have the same problem currently with my 96 integra. I just ordered a new heat shield because I dont think they would put it there if it had no use. If I were you I would do the same thing.

I removed mine a little over a year ago on my 94 Integra, and I haven't had a problem ever since.

The heat shield is there because its required as a safety issue. But, your car doesn't get THAT hot whereas its going to burn a hole in your car. Trust me, my car is a prime example. I've got no problems whatsoever.

Eric, how did you remove it. Did you have to drop the whole exhuast down or did you manage to undo all the bolts. I guess it might be different on your car too, but do you have any tips for me?

If I remember correctly, there's like 4 screws that hold it on. You don't have to take the exhaust off. Chances are you're shield will be rusted, and the screws may be a pain to get off. I just tore at it until it ripped off.

My friend(Slain), has a 93 GSR, and we did the same thing to his. Its not tough at all.

If it is badly rusted- just tear it- it has 4 10mm head bolts holding it together. Its sole purpose was to prevent fires if you just drove on the freeway for an hour and decide to park in foot high dry grass. Remove it- you'll have no problems.

Sweet, you guys are awesome. Yeah, my bolts are really rusted. I was under the car for 1/2 hour trying different sockets and wrenches. Damn Oxygen! Oh well, I guess my engine wouldn't work without it. Oh yeah, and breathing.

Anyway, I guess tomorrow I'll just tear it off.
