Default Ram Air designs?

With ram air, it seems like a lot of bad things would get sucked in... Water, dirt, rocks, bugs, etc. Going to the car wash or driving in the rain seems like it could easily flood the intake. Aside from the danger of sucking up water, all those other things could clog the filter pretty easily. So, how is it that some cars come with ram air and do not have these problems? Does anyone know what they did to eliminate such dangers?

I imagine they have multiple sets of screens and filters. And definatly a bypass valve for the aqua...

Someone posted their setup that seemed to be good. It had a screen up front then a second one a bit furthur back. It was on a teg thru the high beam.

Technically "Ram Air" will not give you additional power unless your running...well, unless you are in an Indy or F1 kart it isn't going to help. Now, "Cold Air"...that will help. There has been numerous discussions about this in the past. May want to search and see what you come up with.

a. name 1 stock car that har ram air. hood scoop does not make it ram air.
- mustang - fake scoop
-celica - fake scoop
- 2nd gen Rx7 - intercooler scoop
-wrx - intercooler scoop
b. yes ram air helps
at speeds 50mph + u CAN get up to 2psi, will it happen prolly not, unless u have a scoop right into your TB and no restrictions AKA air filter.

i have tried it on my integra through the side marker. the difference was not really noticible. i had a small opening but i dont think even with a bigone that would do anything. the risk of getting water in it was too high for me to keep it. getting a screen or another filter would kill the point ram air, its another restriction, with it you would have to go like 90 to feel it. when i had it as ram air i didnt see my filter getting any dirtier so i dont think thats really a consern, but again i had i pipe go from my box to the side marker so i duno what will happent when u run it straight to the filter

good luck

Actually, the Mustang GT's have what appears to be a function hood scoop; the V6's have the fake one. I've seen scoops on Cameros too. NSX has scoops on the side.

I agree that the ram air effect is questionable. I'm mostly concerned with getting outside "cold" air exclusively. I already have a PVC contraption that takes air from the air dam and blows it at the short ram intake's filter. It does help on the highway, because there's more air available to the intake and it's cooler too. It also helps cool down the engine bay, which gets quite hot with my aftermarket header (no heat shield). But, I'm betting that I could get slightly better gains if the intake tube is connected to the PVC. That way, the intake air would be exclusively from outside rather than a mix like it is now. I'm also curious to see how much of a ram air effect I would get. I know people have yacked about this a lot, but a lot of people tend to pass off hearsay and BS as fact. The gains wont show up on a dyno; I think the only way to acutally measure it would be a boost gauge.

Anyways, the problem I have is finding or constructing an inline filter that works well and doesn't choke the engine. I already built one filter that flowed good and should have been effective, but it nearly ended up in the throttle body when I tested it. It was secured in place, but taking it to redline at WOT draws a sh!tload of air. So, I'm considering either trying to find an already made inline filter (3 inch diameter) or building another one and securing it in place extremely well this time. I'm wondering how factory ram air designs handle the crap that's undoubtedly going to get in there. I've already got a drain hole in the PVC for the water, but that isn't a complete solution to that particular problem.

I know the trans ams that have the ram air are said to gain 25 hp. Thats the only engine mod the WS6 option comes with and it supposedly gains 25hp. so it must do something . but the way the intake filter is on hondas makes it difficult to make a good looking, functial ram air scoop. Get a turbo instead, much better at ramming in the air.

All the new stock Mustang scoops are non functional. Even the massive ones on the GT. Yes, the Trans Am does have RamAir and it does gain horsepower from it. But I believe that is the only car that runs it.

On the other other hand, Suzuki (or Yamaha, one of them) has a RamAir system that is quite effective at gaining horsepower as can be noted by dyno run hp vs calculated horsepower while running (moving).

OT: kinda

When i had my 96dx motor and i was messing with my AEM my dad asked me that why dont i just put a lil tube and make a whole in the hood w/a filter sticking out?

Seems like not such a bad idea....but it would of looked gehtoo as hell..

PS for those of you who dont know the 96-up dx'x have the intake mani w/thortle body pointing up instead of to the left like in previous years...so there for it would of made an effective short REAL ram air....i guess

hahha my dad and his crazy to the point ideas

just curious because everyone i know who has a ram air package f body shows those gains on the dyno and also it is not a sealed system at all. the most it does is provide cooler air and reduce the detonation threshold in hot weather... by the for those who want to measure air pressure either use a boost gauge (electronic) and plumb this into the ram air sustem before the throttle body to register. or you could use a map sensor and read the voltage at idle and see if it changes good or bad at speed. maybe the hondata guys might know how to decipher what voltages on a honda map correspond to what air pressure value. if some one knows post it .
