Default Question about CA smog...

ok, i live in cali. so i'm all too familiar w/ the horrible smog tests. but i had a question about it, as cars get older, do they limits that a car needs to get under get less stringent? i was thinking about this the other day, because you wouldn't expect a car w/ a 4 year old motor to perform the same as one that was 16 years old...am i right? so do the passings levels change w/ the age of the car, thats my question...

Actually you bring up a subject that pisses me off every day. The smog stest standards actually get more strict every year. What they do is average the smog tests for every same type of vehicle for last year and find the average. Then they make it the new standards. This sucks sooooooo bad because I work on RX-7's and every single turbo RX get test only along with m3's. We even ahd an unmodifed bmw 540 with brand new cats fail because of this BS.

Once a car fails and you pour 5 gallons of methenol in the gas tank and put our 3 cat smog test pipe on it barely passes. Evey car has to do it and next year every one is screwed again. The smog tests on a lot of sports cars are worse now than they were when they were new. I have no idea how the state is able to get away with making a used engine with possibly over 100k on it pass a smog it couldnt pass when it was new. I believe its a conspiracy to get older cars off the road unless you love push rods.

Bostn is pretty much right. As cars get older, the governemtn want them off the streets, at your cost. But from my experience I've test several BMW 5 and 7 series with nearly 200k miles or more and they pass with out any problems.. but yeah these aren't your sport cars. Try GTP gauranteed to pass.. seems like it's been working really well for our clients.
