Default Primary O2 Sensor

Hello all,

quick and dirty...
2000 Civic Si (Red if it matters )
faulty primary O2 sensor (the one in the cat)

My question...

Is this the O2 sensor that gets replaced with the Greddy Air/Fuel guage? I was thinking I might as well get the guage if so. If anyone can offer some insight please let me know...

Thanks all
Doug

The primary o2 sensor is the one between the engine and the cat (in the exhaust flow). If you are having a problem with it via an engine code, reset the ecu and wait for it to come up again. O2 sensors don't "usually" go bad until after so many years, running too rich or running too lean. Also, unless you are really sure the Greddy o2 sensor responds the same way the stock honda does, you do not want to remove the primary from its place... If you moded anything fuel injection related, running the car too lean or rich would set off the engine codes as running rich/lean,and/or a defective o2.... HTH

I am throwing a code (Code 1 if I recall correctly, the MIL has been on for awhile). I just changed the spark plugs after 40000 miles they were fine. So I dont think I am running to rich or to lean (the motor is fairly stock, no resonator on the intake).

What originally through the code was me driving through about 6 inches of water. Thats when it happened anyway. I can only assume some water splashed up in the wrong place .

I was planning on going with the Greddy guage and sensor because it is much more sensitive and will give me a more accurate air/fuel reading (for when I do start mods).

Thanks for the assistance

I didn't notice if you mentioned, but did you re-set the engine code? If you haven't since the first time, do so now and drive it a bit. I am not exactly sure, but most o2 sensors react the same except for the ones after the cat, they may react a bit slower. Replacing the primary will work with the greddy, but the voltages may be slightly different in it's response (depending on the type of sensor they use). If you haven't reset the ecu since the first code, do it and see if the light comes back. I very much reccomend sticking with factory sensors when it comes time to replace them.....

I didnt think about the voltage requriements. But it is a kit for the Si. I have reset the ECU (disconnected the battery). The MIL light stays off for about 5-10 minutes of driving, then it comes back on with the same code. I let it idle for the same amount of time and no light though. But it is always the same code.

Alright, maybe a good friend with a honda or acura will let you borrow their o2 sensor for a few hours. Then you'll know if you need a new one. Actually, if the greddy o2 sensor has a spec sheet, and the voltage range is from 0-1.25, it could work, A junk yard would have a bunch of o2 sensors, they actually last quite long in stock engines, so one at a junk yard may work fine.

G,

Ive been looking for info on the Greddy A/F Guage all day. Finally found this, http://www.godspeed-motorsports.com/Partsforsale.htm about 1/3 way down. This is what I intend to get. Although I will definitly look into the junk yard option. Gotta be cheaper than paying $225 from Honda. Which is why I was going to look at the Greddy, I knew it was only $300 ish for the guage, sensor, and everything else needed.

Thanks
Doug

and thank you 92CivicSiR, for your wit.

I was told that you could also run b16a1's from japan which have two o2 sensors right next to each other, without plugging in the sensors. I think it was a guy from Hondata. He said just diconnect them both. What do you guys think?
