pops out of 2nd gear
Car is a 2000 5spd insight 98k
searched and potential probs include:
synchros
shifter fork
mainshaft bearing
motor mounts
tranny mounts
low fluid ....but which is most likely?
When I am decelerating and downshifting (with revmatching) from 3rd into 2nd then take foot off the gas, a moment or two later it pops out of 2nd. I put it back in gear and it stays. But did that twice on my commute this morning. I just bought the car last week, and from what I hear the insight's manual tranny is one of its many weak points. Anyone have any experience with this problem, especially on the insight? I have heard that the rubber on the mounts of these cars deteriorates early on, as do the synchros, and clutch according to dealership repairs on other insights I know. Should I do gm synchromesh friction modified, honda mtf, or the new honda mtf for a 5spd insight?
Thanks Everybody!

Well it can be quite a few things. I would say that is more than likely going to a need a 1-2 Sleeve set at minimum. This is comprised of the 1-2 synchros, Sleeve and center hub. It can be a worn fork but, this is not usual for this transmission. Motormounts usually affect those with a shift linkage. Your trans is cable actuated so a bad mount will not affect the shifting as much as one with actual shift linkages. If the fluid was low enough to cause a problem in 2nd gear...you will have bigger problems running fluid that low. I don't think that is the problem Probably just a worn 1-2 Sleeve. I have built serveral of these transmissions and they are actually pretty neat internally...they are the lightest transmissions!!

Thanks Gearspeed, I will do the honda advanced mtf this weekend, and see how it goes from there. I have done a tranny swap on the 91 hatch, but dont know if I have the chops for a rebuild, How much do you think it would cost to rebuild?
Thanks, Frank
Thanks, Frank
I just swapped out a d16 trans, the main & counter shaft bearings were trashed so it would randomly pop out of gear (usually 5th). It was so bad, the shafts pushed each other away when I'd lay into it (full boost).
I also had a B18B1's tranny do this in 3rd, turns out 3rd gear & synchro were trashed. Had a friend use good parts from the LS he used just for 5th gear (for his GSR tranny), and worked great until I sold it. Basicly it would stay in while engine braking, but any throttle would pop it out.
A bent fork could also do this, as it wouldn't full engage the gears, but I'd guess it could be your bearings. The service schedules called for a tranny lube change every 15k miles to 50k, depending on the vehicle. Has yours ever been changed?

On a B-Series trans, you will break a small internal shift linkage piece before bending any shift forks....Try bending one....near impossible. On older SOHC cables you will break the cast shift fork ends before bending them. On newer SOHC you will more than like break the shifter mechanism up top or stretch a shift cable first....not gonna bend a shift fork....its one of the hardest pieces inside the trans.
If a bearing was bad...you would probably hear it. They are not quiet when they are going out.

replaced mtf today, and it definitely shifts a little smoother. I have been double clutching and rev matching and will be as careful as I can to not make anything worse. Thanks Gearspeed for all your help, and I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that all is good for the time being.
