Default Plug cover preference/necessity?

I figured this was the misc place, I tried searching and didnt find what I was lookin for, and it's not a huge deal, but I was wondering...

I have found that in a lot of the pics of engines/engine bays, that most people who have done swaps, or general mods, do not have the spark plug wire cover bolted onto their valve cover. I was wondering if this was merely a cosmetic preference, or if it was something that you needed to leave off for aftermarket wires, etc.

Thanks for the help.

it makes it a whole lot easier to pull the wires off whenever you want
