Default piston rings

when installing the piston rings on the pistons, which is which on the top two? one of them has a silver lining one the out side and the other one is all black. the helms says look for a chamfer but i dont see any, btw whats a chamfer? thanks

The one that goes on top will have what appers to be a 45 degree angle cut on it's edge and the second one will have a small step cut into it.Hold the up to the light to see these things or use a mag. glass

Look for a marking on the ring.
The mark always goes up.

Many times the two upper rings are a different thickness and are not interchangable in the ring lands. Normally the shiney chrome one goes on top as it sees the most heat, but don't guess. Look for a dot or some letters on the ring and they normally face up. If you put them in upside down, they won't work. Also be sure to check your ring gaps or you'll be tearing it down again. Once the ring is on the piston, it should spin freely in the ring land.
