Re: Passing emission tricks
i know right... I guess most people just take the race stuff off every couple years and put the cat on just to pass. then swap back... kind of a pain...

Re: Passing emission tricks
^This. I played with my tune on a emissions dyno last year. By leaning out to 18-1+ i got the CO and HC to half the limit. NOx skyrocketed though which is also tested here. Timing didn't have much effect for me.

Unfortunately I don't have the ability to mess with my tune. I don't do my own tuning nor do I have the software.

Re: Passing emission tricks
OK UPDATE
Went in today and got my emissions done yet again. I went in with 2 gallons of 92 gas and 2 bottles of Iso-Heet. I passed 2 of the 4 sections and the one I failed was HC @ idle by only 27 points so I am close. The one that is the hardest to get down at this point is my CO at cruise. I'm going to get a gallon of straight methanol to mix with the current 1.5 gallons of 92, 2 bottles of HEET and head down again tomorrow hopefully. I think I'm on to something...I just need to get it tested one last time.

Re: Passing emission tricks
Here on the right coast, MD, I've gotten my cammed, tbi 406 stroker in and out with passing numbers. The secret ingredient sits in gallon cans on the shelf at Home Depot. Wood grain alcohol. 60% gas, 40% alcohol. Truck runs so bad on this mix it harely makes it to the test station, but all the numbers pass with flying colors. As soon as you get your pass go directly to the gas station and fillup with hi-test. I also add a bottle of Supreme 130 to increase the octane. At that point it's all good until next time.

Re: Passing emission tricks
I had to pass emissions before i could get tags, My car is an 01 and runs obd1 so theres ZERO chance I would pass, so i had to rent a P.O. box in a town that is close that doesnt test because theres so few residents, then change title and registration address to the P.O. box, new plates and all was almost $300, steep but Never get tested again!!

Re: Passing emission tricks
I'm just trying to pass it so I can get tabs and sell it. If I planned on keeping the car I would have many other options, but sinking a bunch of money into it isn't up my alley.

Re: Passing emission tricks
OK SO I finally have an update as promised. Got my hands on some methanol and I PASSED. I used a 1:1 mixture ratio. 1 gallon of methanol with 1 gallon of 92. My numbers wers stupid low....I had ZERO idle emissions of CO..."0" My HC readings were half the limit and CO cruising was .09....limit is 1.3. Needless to say if you need a way to get around the system I found it and have solid proof. It did make the car run lean and a bit doggy, but I drove it nicely all the way there and filled up right after I got off the rollers.

Re: Passing emission tricks
there are no tricks lmfao!
i love getting people like this in my shop and then failing them!
even if u unplug the ground cable on battery. ur resetting the readiness monitors. and when u get to the smog place if the monitors are not ready. it wont pass.
letting car get warm wont help a dead cat either.
seafoam might help. but not really
only real thing is. no CEL timing dead on ****. tune up and good known o2 and cat!

Re: Passing emission tricks
Congrats on passing! I had that very same setup and was wondering if I was going to pass in CA. I am now running pro 1s, so the idle will give me away. I'll probably end up paying someone, but if I decide to go this route, I know what to do. Thanks for posting this...it will be a help to a lot of those out there that have cammed builds, but can otherwise pass visual.

Went to a gas station that was right next to a smog place, unplugged the battery and went in for smog, passed like a champ and 10 minutes after driving out of the smog shop cel came back on :p
This was on a obd2a civic too...

Re: Passing emission tricks
No prob. What all do your inspections consist of? A full safety check? I find it hard for them to fail you because your car has a "rough idle". Whose standards are they to judge by? I hate emissions, stupid tree huggers. If we cared we would get china and all those other countries to abide by emission standards...our cars don't mean **** to what they produce.

Re: Passing emission tricks
Thought I would post up a comparison of my numbers for all you visial people, plus it is really facinating to me to see how different fuels burn so differently. Keep in mine NOTHING was changed between these 2 tests besides running a 1:1 mixture on gas/methanol for the passing test. The original was done on Chevron 92.
Passing numbers (1:1 gallon ratio gas/methanol)
Cruise emissions (HC ppm): allowed-180 result-90 CO (%) allowed-1.3 result-0.09
Idle emissions (HC ppm): allowed- 220 result-130 CO(%) allowed-1.2 result-0

Re: Passing emission tricks
What, and lose power? Actually, I have not, but I suspect the cams and 650 injectors are working against me. The primaries are bigger than the secondaries of the stock cams. The resolution of the RC 650s isn't very good, so it's no surprise the idle is where it is. I'll pay for my smog and then see how much we can tweak the new injectors after I do the King Perf X manifold and ID1000 injector swap.
