Default Overlap, can I please get an Explanation?

Well, here is the problem, I would like to tune my car. I understand the timing and cam degree's but just curious as to what exactly is overlap, what are the benefits/downfalls. How would I dial it in to see if it would work, and just a clear explanation of the term. This is on a B16A2 with skunk 2 cams/ gears. Thanks.

Nick.

overlap is when the intake and exhaust valves are opened at the same time

on a N/A motor overlap is good because you want to let the motor breathe as much as possible....with FI, all overlap does is dump you precious boost out the tailpipe

Ok, I understand this, now how is this made possible? Are both the exhaust and intake cams set at the same degree? I am still fuzzy on how this is accomplished.

Nick.

Thanks for the quick answer.

Why should I not tune my own car? I understand the basics just need a little clarification on the idea of overlap. Anyone else?

Because in the same breath you say "I understand the timing and cam degree's" and then say "but just curious as to what exactly is overlap". Then you smack us with this "Are both the exhaust and intake cams set at the same degree?" and "I understand the basics"

What is it that you still need clarification on? Aside from the links I've provided and the casual explanation of "when both valves are open", whats not clear?

For example if you're designing a camshaft from scratch, you can shape it so there's a little bit of overlap between the lobes.

And YOUR explanation is where? I've provided links and I've asked what more he would like to know.

Why don't YOU go ahead and answer the mans Q since you seem to know more of what he's looking for...I'm not a mind reader and his initial Q has been answered.

DAMN...right on back at ya'.

I agree that EE_Chris's comments sound like they were rude but he and I have been talking and he has explained that is not what was meant and has thus clarified the situation.

He is a good guy and he explained the answer to my questions. Thanks Chris and thanks H-T!

Sounds good! I just get upset at some people on this forum that thinks that everyone is stupid and they are so smart.

I apoligize. I guess writing instead of speaking can be easily misunderstood.

I am glad he helped you. Thats what we are all here for!
