Okay to TIG weld a block in the car?
The other day I noticed that my B20 has a crack in the block! Worse yet, I could see that the yard that sold me the engine had covered and painted the crack to make it invisible. But after a year, alot of the epoxy had chipped off, exposing the crack. Does anyone know if it is possible to weld the crack without removing the engine? The crack itself is around the area where the transmission bolts. So it is not causing any oil or water leakage.
Exactlt what part of the block is cracked? Alot of people refer to the block in different ways. The clutch housing is not part of the block, and it's in between the tranny casing and the REAL block.
If it's your clutch housing I'd take the tranny off and weld it, then gring it down on the inside.

I had some dipshit tech crack the heat shield boss on my engine. I found the crack while replacing header. I thought the front seals were leaking because of the oil. I found a welder that did the job. He said that the aluminum block could not be cleaned well enough to prevent oil from seeping from the metal during the welding, and that the weld probably would not hold. I took my chances because I didn't want to pull the engine, and nobody else would touch the job because of the fire hazard and the danger of shorting something out. The weld held for about six months, which bought me enough time to build another engine, so I guess that I can't complain.
