Default Oil Pressure, WTF?

I just went through the pain in the *** process of replacing bearings. I plastigaged everything and came up with .0015". That's within spec. My oil pressure is still low. I don't know what the hell is going on but I'm getting pissed. My oil pump only has around 6K miles on it. Is it going bad already? How can I check before buying a new pump? BTW, I have an Autometer mechanical oil pressure gauge but there is air in the line. Is that causing bad readings?

If you are sure there is air in the line i would definitely fix that first, the air will compress when the pressure goes up, which is probably giving you the low reading

Any ideas how to do that? I didn't anything about bleeding the line in the directions from Autometer.

the only thing i can think to do is get the gauge out of the car, hold the line up vertically and fill the tube with oil, maybe move it around a bit to get the air bubble to work its way out to the top, thats the only thing i can think of, ive never really encountered that problem before

How much pressure does it have? Say at idle and about 3k. The air in the line isn't going to hurt anything.

im in the same boat as you with my built GSR. Im running a mechanical and electrical gauge to make sure the reading is correct. You havent posted your numbers, but im at 10-15 at idle, and 50 at 3k and up... 10w30 oil

Mine is reading a little over 0 at idle and 30 at 3K. There is a substantial amount of air in the line. I'm talking like a 6" section of the tubing is just air.

hmmm... When my car is off, most of the oil seems to drain out of the mechanical line anyway. As soon as i turn the car on, it all pressurizes with oil

Have you had the head off? Was the oil control jet installed? (if your uses one)

that would definitely do it also.... air in the line "shouldnt" cause a problem, but if theres nothing else he can think of, id try and get the air out as much as possible

I did have the head off and the oil control jet was in the block when I put it back on. If that's the one you're talking about. This is a B16, BTW. I just had the car running a few mins ago and I can watch the oil in the line bouncing back and forth with the air in the line. I don't see how it can be close to accurate doing that. The gauges sits a 0 at idle but my idiot light doesn't come on. I e-mailed Autometer about it and they said if I bleed it, when I turn the car off, the oil will just all drain back out again.

On the back side of the block between cylinders 2 and 3? It's pushed in flush with the top of the gasket surface.

Did you use a "T" fitting for the gauge and dummy sender? Did you put a new gasket on the oil pickup? Quit worrying about the air in the line!!!

I have that. A new gasket was used on the oil pickup.

my oil pickup was smashed against my pan when i got low oil psi readings. but the pan was fine. i think 1.8 pickup needs to go with 1.8 pan etc etc...
