Default OBD2 a or b? ....what years?

HOndata says that they make ecu conversions for OBD2a(96-97) and OBD2b(98-00)

NOw I have a 98 hatch, build date 6/98, which system do I have? IS there a way to tell by looking at something? I was pretty sure OBD2b started in the year 1999.

This would be great if my car was obd2b, is HONDATA's reference wrong?????

96-98 OBD2a (three ecu plugs for 5spd) 99-00 OBD2b (two ecu plugs for 5spd)

Look at your plug on the ecu.

They go from Left to Right.

a-b-c-d

If you have pins in

A-C-D

Then you have a 96-98

If you have pins in

A-B-C

Then you have a 99-00

If you need a harness adapter, I have them as well.

thanks so much.....a picture....wow, thanks now I can find out.

katman, ok, this is what i have...I have a d16y8 from a 2000 EX going into my 98 DX hatch, and I have the 00 EX computer/harness as well. What is it going to take to make this work in my car? I really did not want to have to buy a 96-98 EX ECU/harness, so what can you do to help me?

np on the image.
Well the 00 EX harness almost works in 96-98 civic's but not quite. There's some re-wiring modifications that need to be done to it, I hear it's a bitch though (never did one myself).

I suggest you sell or trade the '00 EX harness + ECU and find yourself a 96-98 EX engine harness + ECU. If you go this route, everything will plug n' play; no wiring needed. That's the easiest solution.

I'd check your local junkyard to see if they'll trade you those parts.

ok, the ecu is not that big of a deal.

But the wiring harness is....honda wants too much for one, and there are no local junkyards that carry civics.

So if I get the ECU, can I run the extra wires to make my dx harness work witht he new vtec engine? Spool, press., etc.////???

-- You sure can! I suggest this route if you indefinitely cannot find a 96-98 EX harness.
