not changing the washer on the oil drain bolt?
if you don't have one on there it'll leak, at least mine did. you can just keep reusing the same one and it shouldn't leak. the owners manual just wants you to spend more money.
That is because it is a *crush* washer and deforms to match the grooves of the oil pan... You may reuse it maybe once, assuming the proper amount of torque is not applied...
But if it was, then 9x out of 10, it will leak as you have discovored...

Agreed. I re-use the washer once. I just flip it over.
If you have a cool parts counter, you just say, "hey, could you throw a couple washers in the bag for me too?" and usually they will. I do that everytime I buy parts at either the Acura or Honda dealership, and I have prolly 20-30 washers now...

What about the Spoon Oil Drain Plug? It came with a metal washer, do I need to replace it?
Change the washer!. In the long run its cheaper. As some have discovered an old washer will leak. Most people just tighten the bolt more to stop the leak. Eventually the threads will strip in the pan. All my local honda filters come with a new washer pre-packaged with the filter. Kinda makes it a no brainer.
Hey, do not flip the washer over and reuse it.
The soft side of the washer is suppose to be pushed and compressed to fit the curve of the drain hole for a perfect fit, that is why you are suggested to replace it. Flipping it over and use it is having the hard side rub against the pan, it is worse than reusing it on the same side (which should be no problem if you torque it equal to or slightly higher than your last usage, but don't push it too far or your thread on the drain plug will be damaged).

update: i just retightened the bolt, i actually could get about an 1/8 turn from it. I guess the heat of the oil and lack of a new washer really loosens it up a bit.
i also went ahead and bought some filters and washers from the dealer. They charged me 40 cents per washer

They are less than 5 cents at my honda dealer. I bought 20 of them for like $1.08.
I "lube" both sides of the washer too when putting it on. Kind-of like wetting the rubber gasket on an oil filter.
Also an FYI: make a point to check the base of the dipstick tube for leaks when you check your oil. Two people on this board have had engine failure from an unnoticed leak at this area. Honda should offer to fix it under warranty.

the parts counter where I buy filters always just tapes a new washer onto the top of the filter when I buy them. I know they charge me for them, but it isn't too much. even if its .50, i think the peace of mind is worth it.
