I have a head laying in my garage and I was wondering if i could adjust the valve lash b4 i slap it on the block or does it have to be on the block in order to do it?
You should be able to do that, if you figure out how to handle a couple issues.
Lubrication while you're turning the camshafts?
Support the head without scratching the headgasket surface or obstructing the action of the valves.
Make sure you return the camshafts to #1tdc before installing onto an engine.
You're SUPPOSED to adjust valves with them at room temperature, so that part's good.

no dont do that...the whole point of a valve adjustment is to adjust the clearance between the camshaft and the lifters....the only reason why i was asking if the cams are in or out was because if they were out just apply assembly lube before puttin em in...

only if the cams are out and ur putting them back in...if ur gonna disassemble and reassemble just for learning sake...yeah id put it on the cam lobes and lifters between the head and the cam cradles..pretty much anywhere that metal to metal contact occurs...good luck
id do it with the head on the block. Your going to find that the cams are going to want to wander without the tension of the timing belt on them. Plus to do it properly your going to have to install the cams then take them off to install the head then reinstall the cams again. Too much work.
