No snap ring on tranny???

I´ve read how to snap it out and in, but what happens if you do not use it?
Mine´s broken.
What might happen?
What´s that ring for?

It holds the main shaft in place so that the gears stay aligned. It is necessary to use so buy a new one. Major tranny damage may occur if it is not used.
