Default New tranny or re-build???

I have a GS-R tranny in my civic right now and the syncros are going out in 3rd and 5th. I was wondering if it would be better to re-build my current tranny than to purchase a new one. Any insight tranny gurus?

6 dollar manual from ebay
50 dollars in tools
300 in replacement parts (if even that)
a little bit of patience

having a good transmission that you personally know to be in good condition because you've seen it yourself? All while having a much better underestanding of how it works? Much better / cheaper in the long run than blindly purchasing another transmission

How much would it cost to have someone do it for me. I'm nervous about working on a transmission.

if you can drop the tranny yourself, a shop shouldnt charge more than 500 for a full rebuild.. if you have the tools and the time, i would do it myself . but thats just me

Sounds like an idea. Any idea how long my tranny will hold up with the 3rd gear syncros going out? How bad is it for my tranny? By not fixing it right away am I doing more damage?

3rd gear and it's synchro and it's synchro sleeve will more than likely have to be replaced.

It won't explode, but eventually your 3rd gear won't be able to stay in gear. And then you'll be skipping 3rd and going to 4th. So then your 4th will eventually wear out, etc etc.

It's a slow process, so you have time. But I'd start saving if i were you

I was in the same boat when I got 2nd and 3rd gear grinds in my LS tranny. But I just ended up getting a GSR tranny instead. Now I have a perfectly good LS tranny sitting around that I could have built to perfectly match my needs.

You should consider a rebuild if you have another car to drive during the down time.

Where would I go to get the info I need to fix the tranny myself? Should I get a new clutch and lightweight flywheel along with fixing my tranny. I have roughly $3,000. But I want to spend it smart. I may have to replace some parts in the engine, so I have to stretch it out.

i recommend rebuilding the tranny yourself, also you can buy a complete 1-5 carbon coated synchros from gearspeed for around 225 this will not include the sleeve that i would recommend you replace in the gear that grinds. also if you wait too long you will have to replace the whole gear so i recommend fix it asap.

Check out the condition of the clutch and flywheel when you pull off the tranny.

Wouldn't it be smart to just upgrade to a lightweight flywheel and some sort of clutch while the tranny is out so I don't have to in the future???

If you're getting the tranny pulled from a shop then yes, go ahead. But if you can pull it off yourself then see how much meat you still have left on your clutch.

When I got a new clutch/flywheel I began running into other problems: noisy bearings, broken motor mount, weakening axle.

what do you think could cause those kind of problems. A lot of people have had problems with noisy throwout and release bearings from ACT before. Then with the puck clutches and the unsprung clutches their is the agressiveness that it brings along on your suspension and your tranny.

True story.
In fact... it may turn out to be a faster process than that.

I thought Gearspeed only offered 3-5 synchros?? I guess I'll have to look again.

Should I replace the clutch and flywheel? About how long do I have till I lose 3rd? Alot of friends were telling me to just replace the tranny with a newer one.
